Spoonflower Fabrics & Wallpaper

Spoonflower is a marketplace based out of Durham, North Carolina that produces fabric and wallpaper from artists all over the globe. By teaming up with talented surface designers, they have been able to create a collaborative effort to draw more attention to indie artists while helping to support them financially by means of licensing.

Designing for fabric and wallpaper has been a dream of mine for many years now. Whenever I see a beautiful space covered in unique textiles, I immediately want to know who the artist is and where I can see more of their work. 

Being able to start with a digital design concept then see it flourish into a tangible item that can be placed in peoples homes is something I never thought would be possible.

Each time someone purchases fabric or wallpaper from Spoonflower, the artist who designed it gets a cut of the final sale. While I didn’t see much traction in the first two years of being on Spoonflower, my shop has recently started to gain more traction. 

Each week, Spoonflower hosts a design challenge with a specific prompt. While this hasn’t been a big part of my strategy marketing my shop on their site, I have heard great things from other designers who have been discovered by entering a unique fabric or wallpaper design into the weekly design challenge.

Since my surface pattern design work caters to a specific clientele, I don’t always find Spoonflower’s design prompts to be fitting to my style. While I could easily create designs to match the weekly prompt, I have always tried to stay true to my own aesthetic.

Spoonflower is really good about keeping up with current trends and the latest technology, so I’m hopeful that they’re able to offer more product types in the near future. In the meantime, I have big plans to expand my line of fabric and wallpaper designs over the next few years, so if you don’t see something you like right away, stay tuned!
