When it comes to home decor, there are a million and one ways to make a statement within your space. Whether you live in a tiny apartment or an estate style house, having a place that feels warm & welcoming is something we can all agree on.
Wallpaper is a great, quick way to add a pop of color, pattern, or texture to just about any room in your home. Before you start shopping, there are a few things you need to know to make sure you choose the right wallpaper for your needs.
What to Know Before Buying Wallpaper
1. Consider the size of the room
The first thing you need to do is consider the size of the room you're going to be working with. Just as not all wallpaper is created equally, not all wallpaper designs will look the same in every space. If you're working with a small space, you probably want to choose a wallpaper with a smaller pattern than you’d use to decorate a huge warehouse. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but these are general guidelines to help you get started. A larger pattern or a dark color will make the room feel smaller, so choose your design accordingly.
If you're working with a larger space, feel free to go nuts with a wallpaper in a larger scale or a darker color. Just remember to make sure the pattern or color doesn't overwhelm the room.
2. Think about the lighting
The lighting in the room will also affect how the wallpaper looks. If the room is well-lit, you can choose a wallpaper with a brighter color or a more intricate pattern. If the room is dark, you'll want to choose a wallpaper with a lighter color or a simpler pattern. The right lighting can make a big difference in the look and feel of your bedroom.
Professional tip: If you’re working with a bedroom that’s dark and you’d like to brighten it up a bit before installing your wallpaper, consider adding a pair of lamps to either side of your bed. If you don't have a ceiling light, you can always add a floor lamp or other stand-alone piece.
3. Consider the style of the room
The style of the room will also help you choose the right wallpaper. If you're decorating a traditional room, you'll want to choose a wallpaper with a classic pattern or a muted color. If you're decorating a modern room, you can choose a wallpaper with a bold pattern or a bright color.
4. Choose the right material
There are two main types of wallpaper: vinyl and paper. Vinyl wallpaper is more durable and can be easily wiped clean. Paper wallpaper is less expensive and is easier to apply.
5. Measure twice, cut once
When you're ready to start wallpapering, make sure you measure the wall twice before you cut the wallpaper. You don't want to have to waste any material or end up with a short piece of wallpaper.
6. Use a level
When you're applying the wallpaper, make sure you use a level to make sure it's straight. If the wallpaper isn't straight, it will look crooked and unprofessional.
7. Take your time
Wallpapering can be a time-consuming process, so don't rush. Take your time and make sure you do a good job.
8. Be careful with the corners
Wallpapering around corners can be tricky, so be careful. If you're not sure how to do it, there are plenty of tutorials online or you can ask a professional for help.
9. Enjoy your new wallpaper
Once you're finished wallpapering, take a step back and admire your work. You'll be happy you took the time to do it yourself.
